Treadmill Tips - Step Toward Better Health And A Fit Body

The thought of exercise equipment, still brings an automatic vision of the old stationary bike or a treadmill. With the ever growing hectic life we lead, Treadmills are still one of the most widely used exercisers out there. Enabling us to stay home or at work and work out, that's serious convenience. Not only has it helped us gain a more regular routine but with all the bells and whistles that are out now, like book holders and I-pods, people are getting on the treadmill just to read their mail. They just might lose some of that extra luggage yet.

Treadmills have come a long way since the 1950's basic treadmill, made up of a motor, mats, rollers, belts and the electrical parts. Basically, the top of the belt rotates in such a way that it allows the user to "run" on a constant or varying speed, thus, controlling the level of workout. Although today's treadmills have the same basic components as in the past, the treadmill has become an extremely sophisticated piece of exercise equipment.

In addition to providing some very helpful and important information during your workout, treadmills provide a wide variety of exercise options. From walking to jogging to running and even hill climbing, what ever your choice of exercise, you still control the ability to pace yourself at your comfort level. Now with the readily available features like the previously mentioned book holders and I-pods, you can get the flip up TV, track suspension and of course the drink holder. I'm sure everyone can find their comfort zone pretty easily.

Many people find it more rewarding and enjoyable enrolling in a formal exercise class and physically going to the gym than working out at home alone, and that's great. But many times your work schedules, personal security, weather and health status; all make us reluctant to go out doors for walks regularly, this is the beauty and convenience of a treadmill. Space has always been an issue but with the folding treadmill you don't need that much space to store it away.

If watching movies is what you like, you can place the treadmill in front of the television set so that you can work out while catching a movie. Or why not finish that book you started or get the last of the reports read for work. If you would prefer walking outside, you can roll the treadmill outside and have the breeze in your face. If you occupy yourself with things that are enjoyable to you while you're on the treadmill, time will fly and your workouts will seem effortless. But most importantly your workouts will get done.

Determining what treadmill is right for you. Well there really is no set formula to figure this out, everybody is different and you should find what's right for you. But here are some things to keep in mind if you're in the market for one.

For starters treadmills are no different than any other products; the cheaper products don't have many options and break sooner. The higher end treadmills cost more, have more complicated parts, will break down less but when they do break down they cost plenty to service. Factor this in when you're figuring out your treadmill requirements.

These major factors should be considered when choosing your treadmill; they just might affect your choice, your age, your weight and your personal health. Some might say that exercise is necessary for everyone, but the level of exercise has to change accordingly to each individual's traits. If you're buying for the whole family, make sure you look at everyone's requirements and get a machine that's well rounded for all. For example, a bigger person may need a wider belt or more space between the handlebars to maintain free arm movement. Age is extremely important especially for older people, a smoother less resilient deck and the heart rate monitor should be key components. Safety features benefit all ages and levels so try and make it a point to include these options.

Decide whether you want to run, walk, workout on an incline, and what type of workout you're going to perform. This will determine what top speed you need for your treadmill and what size belt as well. If you have problems with shin splits or bad knees or hips, you might want to checkout a suspension deck. They really help with cushioning the blow and savings your achy parts.

Also, consider the length of your stride. If you take big or large steps when walking, obviously you'll have even a longer stride and will probably need a longer deck and belt. You can get an extensive workout on a longer tread belt and you get more adjustment options.

Determining the quality of motor you need for your treadmill comes down to the type and duration of exercise you choose. Short workouts that require the treadmill to work for short periods of time may not require such an advanced motor, which would save you some money. Whereas, if you use the treadmill for long endurance workouts a stronger motor would be your best bet. Also, consider the noise that the motor makes, an annoying motor just might cut your workouts short.

Once you determine how much you'll use the treadmill and what features fit you, you'll be better suited to make an educated decision. Obviously, we recommend the higher end equipment that suits your needs today but has some growth potential in case you get hooked. Safety is always included in our recommendation, it's a must. Also, higher end treadmills will offer an extended warranty which will help save your treadmill from becoming an expensive clothes rack that can put an end to your treadmill training.

Stabilizing Thyroid Function for Optimal Weight

For many women thyroid function is a legitimate concern. It couldcause both an increase and a decrease in weight depending on thecurrent state of the thyroid function. Thyroid disease may existas either an excessive production of thyroid hormone or adeficient production of thyroid hormone. The increase or decreasein weight will usually be closely associated with the severity ofthe condition. Severe cases of excessive thyroid hormone willresult in a more significant weight loss than mild cases while asevere case of deficient thyroid hormone will result in a moresignificant weight gain than a mild case. This article willexplain hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism and will also discussthe prevalence of thyroid disease and how herbal supplements canbe used to treat thyroid disease.

Understanding Hypothyroidism

Women who have difficulty losing weight may be concerned aboutthe function of their thyroid. This is because a condition suchas hypothyroidism can contribute to small weight gains as well asdifficulty in losing weight. Hypothyroidism is a form of thyroiddisease in which the thyroid does not produce a sufficient amountof the thyroid hormone.

If you suspect hypothyroidism may be contributing to yourinability to lose weight, consult your doctor to be tested forthis condition. With a simple blood test your doctor candetermine whether or not there is a lack of the thyroid hormonein your system. A severe deficiency of the hormone can result inapproximately ten pounds of excess weight. This weight willlikely be the result of water retention and should dissipaterather quickly once treatment to correct the hormone levelsbegins. The American Thyroid Association categorizes the weightloss associated with treating hypothyroidism by stating, "Sincemuch of the weight gain in hypothyroidism is accumulation in saltand water, when the hypothyroidism is treated one can expect asmall (usually less than 10% of body weight) weight loss."

Understanding Hyperthyroidism

Most women think of hypothyroidism when they are concerned aboutlosing weight but hyperthyroidism is an equally dangerouscondition. Hyperthyroidism can result in weight loss which stemsfrom the overproduction of the thyroid hormone. This hormoneregulates the metabolism and too much of the hormone can elevatethe metabolism to a level which can result in weight loss.

If you are considering treatment options which create an elevatedlevel of thyroid hormone in the blood it is important to notethis can be quite dangerous and can create more problems than itsolves. Some of the problems which may arise include the loss ofmuscle protein and increased anxiety.

The Prevalence of Thyroid Disease

The statistics surrounding thyroid disease can be quiteastounding. According to the Thyroid Foundation of America it isestimated that roughly 4.1 million men and 8 million women sufferfrom thyroid disease which has not been diagnosed and is notbeing treated. This is unfortunate as both extremes of thyroiddisease can contribute to weight problems. Hyperthyroidism cancause weight loss while hypothyroidism can result in a weightgain. The weight losses and weight gains associated with thyroiddisease are not usually substantial but they can be significantenough to cause a host of medical problems including increases inblood cholesterol, fatigue, depression and even cardiacarrhythmia.

Using Herbal Supplements to Treat Thyroid Disease

Many women turn to the use of herbal supplements to treat thyroiddisease. Thyvox, in particular, is one such supplement which maybe used to increase the level of the thyroid hormone in thesystem. The purpose of increasing this thyroid hormone istypically to allow for the hormone levels to stabilize to anadequate level to allow the body to shed the few excess pounds ofweight the deficiency of the hormone has caused. If you areconsidering taking a substance such as Thyvox you should visitthe following website to learn more about the supplement:http://www.thyvox.com/.

You should also visit your doctor to discuss the use of this orany supplements before you begin to use them. Consulting yourdoctor is very important because they can provide you with agreat deal of information which can help you decide whether ornot the use of the supplement is worthwhile in your case. Theymight be able to suggest another treatment option or they may beable to point out the risks associated with each treatment methodso you can make an informed decision.

Using Thyroid Hormones for Weight Loss

Copyright © 2007 DBA AdPro Media Sales, All Rights ReservedWritten by: Kamau Austin

Many women who are concerned about their weight often seek outsimple solutions for achieving their weight loss goals. However, unfortunately there are no simple solutions to weight loss. Infact the Food and Drug Administration strongly cautions women tobe suspicious of weight loss aids making outrageous claims bystating, "It is important for consumers to be wary of claims thatsound too good to be true. When it comes to weight-loss schemes, consumers should be particularly skeptical of claims containingwords and phrases like: easy, effortless, guaranteed, miraculous, magical, breakthrough, new discovery, mysterious, exotic, secret, exclusive, ancient." Similarly women should be aware of anyunbelievable claims made by manufacturers of thyroid hormones forthe purpose of weight loss.

The Theory behind Using Thyroid Hormones for Weight Loss

The thyroid hormone is closely associated with metabolism.Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid produces anexcess of the thyroid hormone. This excess amount of hormone hasthe result of increasing the metabolism and may result in weightloss. Conversely hypothyroidism is a condition in which thethyroid is under active and produces a deficient amount of thethyroid hormone. Modest weight gain of 5-10 pounds may occur inthis hormonal state.

It is the condition of hyperthyroidism which is of the mostinterest to women who are interested in losing weight through theuse of thyroid hormone. There have been several studies whichindicated the use of the thyroid hormone resulted in more weightloss than when the hormone was not used. In general more severecases of hyperthyroidism result in greater amounts of weightloss.

The Risks of Using Thyroid Hormones for Weight Loss

While studies have indicated the use of thyroid hormone in aweight loss program resulted in greater weight loss than inprograms which did not use the benefit of the thyroid hormone, itis important to note there are some risks associated with the useof thyroid hormone to lose weight. Specifically the AmericanThyroid Association describes these associated risks by stating,"However, once the excess thyroid hormone is stopped, the excessweight loss is usually regained. Furthermore, there may besignificant negative consequences from the use of thyroid hormoneto help with weight loss, such as the loss of muscle protein inaddition to any loss of body fat. Pushing the thyroid hormonedose to cause thyroid hormone levels to be elevated is unlikelyto significantly change weight and may result in other metabolicproblems."

If you wish to investigate the use of thyroid hormones to assistyou in achieving your weight loss goals, you should carefullyconsider the risks of these hormones. The use of synthetichormones is certainly justifiable in the case of a legitimatehormonal excess or deficiency but when used specifically for thepurposes of weight loss care should be taken to avoid creatingadditional medical problems. Also, it should be noted that it ispossible to quickly regain the weight once the use of the hormoneis stopped. A condition of hyperthyroidism creates a need foradditional calories. Women who become used to eating toaccommodate this condition may have a difficult time scaling backtheir eating habits once they are no longer using the thyroidhormone.

Using Thyroid Hormones under a Doctor's Care

In any weight loss endeavor you undertake, you should always seekout the assistance and guidance of your doctor. This is importantfor a number of reasons. First of all you should always consultyour doctor when you are attempting to lose weight to ensure youare healthy enough to begin exercising and to make changes toyour diet or begin taking supplements. Additionally, your doctorcan discuss the use of supplements with you and provide a greatdeal of insight into the benefits and risk involved with takingthese supplements.

Herbal Supplements Containing Thyroid Hormones

Thyvox is just one of many herbal supplements which are marketedfor the purpose of producing weight loss through the use of thethyroid hormone. More information on Thyvox can be found at thefollowing web address: http://www.thyvox.com/. Here consumers can learnmore about the substance and how it is designed to work. Thisinformation along with information obtained in a consultationwith your doctor can help you determine whether or not you wishto use Thyvox in your weight loss endeavors.

According to the American Obesity Association, by losing asmall amount of weight - around 5 – 10% of your initial weight- you can reduce the risk of serious health problems like heartdisease, diabetes, high blood pressure arthritis, respiratorydisease and even some forms of cancer. Just imagine losing evenmore weight than this. The benefits and change in your lifewould be dramatic. But, how do you lose weight the healthy wayand benefit from all the health related changes that come withlosing weight the best way?

Weight-loss Programs (diets):

Healthy weight-loss programs combine eating nutritional foodswith regular exercise to help encourage the body to convertstored fat in the body into glucose to act as fuel, so you arenot only losing weight, you have more energy. Often, people getinto the bad habit of yo-yo dieting, which is the act of losingweight, then gaining it right back and then start dietingagain. By learning a healthy, easy-to-stick eating and exerciseplan over a traditional diet, you will not only lose weight thehealthy way, you will notice a raise in self-esteem, improvedhealth and learn to keep weight off long term.

The only way that the body can lose weight is to burn morecalories than your body is taking in. Don’t make the mistake ofthinking that just because you need to eat fewer calories, youhave to eat less food. Healthy eating plans are all abouteducating yourself on which foods can be eaten in large amountsand which foods must only be eaten in small portions. But, mostof all, it is important to remember that when you are losingweight the healthy way, you never need to starve yourself or gohungry. You just need to learn what different foods do to thebody.

Some very popular diets these days are the South Beach Diet, the Mayo Clinic Diet and the Cabbage soup diet.

Weight-loss Supplements:

There are many supplements available for those who are changingto a healthier lifestyle and want to have some extra nutritionor want a little help along the way. Just remember that nomatter how good a supplement is, it will not take the place ofproper nutrition and exercise. Diet pills are made tocomplement your weight loss goals while using a logical eatingplan, as well as regular activity.

Vitamin and mineral supplements have become popular over theyears to help our bodies get the vitamins and minerals that arelacking in the soil our foods are grown in. Many vitamins andminerals are great complimentary practices and will help togive you energy and an overall feeling of well being, as wellas assist in the shedding pounds process.

Some well known diet pills are Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)pills, Phentermine (prescription) and Hoodia Gordonii.

A word of caution, before taking any supplement, make sure thatyou read the label carefully and speak to your doctor first ifyou are currently on any medications or suffer from anyillnesses.

Healthful Snacking

A calorie is simply a calorie regardless of whether it comesfrom carbohydrates, protein, or fat. If you consume morecalories than you use, you will put on weight. It iss assimple as that. In order to avoid weight gain, the number ofcalories in must equal the number of calories out. If you takethe time to plan and sort out what you are going to eat, youwill find it easier to ensure that you choose a wide variety offoods from all food groups and thus follow a healthier eatingplan.

These days most of us lead hectic, busy, frenetic lives. We arejuggling a variety of roles and trying to somehow fit everythinginto a seemingly-insufficient 24 hour day. It's not surprisingthat healthy eating loses priority when we are rushing to getto work, to get the kids to school, going to meetings, gettinghome chores done. At times like this people are more likely tomiss meals altogether and substitute them with junk food. Bysnacking on healthy foods, you can to some extent, compensatefor the damage you are doing to your body when you don't eatproperly. Similarly, eating small meals throughout the day canhelp provide necessary nourishment.

Eating food in its raw state, meaning as unprocessed aspossible, ensures that you are getting the food's full vitaminand mineral content, as none will be destroyed during thecooking process. Cooking modifies the food molecules therebydestroying their nutrients and enzymes. When you eat raw food, you may need to chew more to break the food down. By doing thisyour body sends signals to the digestive tract to produce anadequate amount of digestive enzymes.

Another healthy eating tip is, where possible, try to grill orbake your food instead of frying it. If you do need to fry orsauté, use half the recommended amount of fat. Keep in mindthat brown bread and rice is nutritionally better than theirwhite counterparts. Whole grain bread is an excellentconvenience food. If you get your kids used to brown bread intheir earlier years, avoiding white bread altogether, you’ll beglad you did.

When it comes to hot and cold beverages, there are innumerablechoices when it comes to the wonderful world of herbal teas. They may not be to everyone’s taste but if you try, you aremore than likely to find one that suits you. They are alsoexceedingly beneficial for you. If you are a coffee lover, youmight try a coffee substitute such as dandelion coffee.

In addition to cutting down on coffee and tea, you shouldreduce your salt and sugar intake as well. At present there aremany types of vegetable stock cubes and vegetable bouillionpowders available in health food shops for added flavor. Also, using both fresh and dried herbs can help increase the flavourof a dish without needing to add much salt.

Risks Of Diet Pills

Diet pills give you a strong chance of helping you lose weight. That is why they are so easily packagable worldwide because so many people struggle with weight issues and want to change it without doing the work which is normally involved. Before you take diet pills you must be acknowledged of what the risks are because the false claims companies provide are not enough to fill your mind.

What are the risks?

Diet pills which are prescribed to patients are really strong drugs and they all have a potential of having dangerous side effects. Some of these side effects from taking the prescribe pills which start as minor side effects can become very dangerous.

Some diet pills, mostly the stimulant-based diet pills, are addictive and may become a abused drug by many people. By abusing a drug, you may become dependent on it. Confront your doctor before having a prescribed diet pill intake. Find out if they are addictive and if there are any signals to alert you if you may become addicted soon.

A lot of prescription diet pills will surpress the appetite which changes your want for food. Therefore your calorie intake is far lower for the majority of people. This sounds like the most incredible solution for obesity but if you reduce your caloric intake on a regular basis, your metabolism will slow down at the same time. As your metabolism slows down, the weight that you lose will also slow down. Due to this, a lot of people will lose a set amount of weight from only using diet pills.

You can change your lifestyle and combine it with your diet pill intake. By changing your lifestyle so you exercise regularly, change your eating habits and get regular health checkups with your doctor should increase your weight loss for the better.

So if you are serious about losing weight and plan to use diet pills, take percaution and get informed about the risks of prescription diet pills before you use them.

Over the counter diet pills:

You will find a lot of over the counter diet pills available at your local pharmacy but they are not going to be able to do the job like the prescription diet pills can. A lot of these diet pills which are able to be purchased by anyone are claiming significant weight losses without excercising and other false claims. These are all lies however and are not obsorbed by many people in the obese world. You should target finding a good prescription drug for weight loss rather then a over the counter drug. If not, do your research on the side effects, truth, and other information about the drugs you plan on purchasing “over the counter”.

Some side effects..

The majority of the side effects from diet pills are minor but some may be more serious. This may include a heart problem which has previously been linked to two popular medications (Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine) but these are now off the market. Depending on what medication you are taking in and your tolerance for that drug it may vary the side effects it will have on you. Most medication has caused side effects of restlessness, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, and elevated blood pressure. If you continue to treat these side effects they may begin to stop.

Working The Antioxidant Diet

As more and more medical research gives credence to the association of a healthy diet to staying disease free, people finally seem ready to listen. The evidence is all there; the avoidance of fatty foods, preservatives, and other chemicals gives the human body a better chance of warding off illnesses of all varieties. When we eat whole foods, we are introducing foods in their nature state into the body; we are naturally designed to process these foods – it makes sense that whole foods would be the least disruptive for us to digest.

Included within this whole food group are fresh fruit and vegetables – the most consistent providers of antioxidants. Antioxidants act as our internal bodyguards – battling free radicals that cause the disruption of healthy cells. Cells that become unhealthy – those that have fallen victim to free radicals – can cause cancer and other illness. With a solid force of antioxidants inside us, we can have more of a chance of fighting disease and remaining healthy. And in order to ensure the proper reserve of antioxidants, it is wise to follow an antioxidant diet.

An antioxidant diet begins with the identification of those foods that pack the most punch when it comes to delivering high doses of antioxidants. Again, following a diet that focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables will go a long way to beginning your antioxidant diet.

Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale deliver significant amounts of the antioxidant lutein, while tomato products – fresh tomatoes included – carry the antioxidant lycopene. Those vegetables rich in the antioxidant beta-carotene include carrots and sweet potatoes; and foods high in Vitamins A, C, and E have all been shown to be deliver antioxidants.

In addition, receiving quite a bit of attention lately, is the blueberry which has been shown to have outstanding qualities as part of an antioxidant diet.

Eating a healthy, well-rounded antioxidant diet may mean some changes in lifestyle. Working with a medical professional to ensure that you are getting all the proper nutrients will help you on your journey of achieving your goal. With the integration of an antioxidant diet into your lifestyle, you’ll be working with your body to protect yourself from disease and ensure a long life of health.

Using Diet Patches

More than 75% of the population fights with issues that relate to weight loss. It may be a few pounds or a case of obesity but either way there is no magic bullet for curing obesity or weight gain. But using diet patches seems to be the latest hope for an easy solution to the problem. The diet patch is the latest and greatest craze to make it to the weight loss market in recent months. And it certainly is the most attractive diet plan to come along in ages.

There are a variety of different diet patches on the market. Some claim to work as fast as within 24 hours which is very impressive. Others claim results in a couple of days or a week. Almost all of them share basic ingredients and all deliver those ingredients the same way.

Using skin patches is not a new idea. Many drugs, contraceptives, and stop smoking remedies are delivered slowly through a time release skin patch. It has been proven that medication is absorbed extremely well through the skin. It has now become quite a common delivery system for prescription drugs and alternative treatments too.

So using a patch to deliver diet supplements should not be such a surprise. There are several different manufacturers using diet patches to delver a mix of minerals and herbs that are suppose to help you shed those extra pounds.

Garcinia, Guarana, and Fucus vesiculosus are common herbal ingredients that speed up the metabolism. Yerba mate is a substance like caffeine which works by speeding up the metabolism. Chromium picolinate is used to balance blood sugar levels.

Green tea concentrate has become a popular choice in dietary supplements so it is not surprising that it is now being used in diet patches. It is thought to metabolize fat more efficiently and to also speed up metabolism.

For best results apply the diet patch directly to dry skin in an area where there is a thin fat layer. For example the upper arm is often a good spot. The area not only needs to be dry but it also needs to be hairless, so if needed shave the area.

Once the patch is on, the person does not have to worry about getting it somewhat wet such as in the shower, however swimming is too wet. Replace as per the manufacturers directions that came with the patches or as directed by your doctor.

It is not the diet patch itself that can be the problem but rather the way a person perceives the purpose of the patch. If the person believes the patch is all that is needed to shed those pounds they will be met with disappointment. Whether diet patches or diet supplements are being used they must be combined with a good exercise program and an understanding of food calories including what a person can or cannot eat. All of these elements are an integral part of a good weight loss program.

If the calorie intake is higher than the calorie burn it will not matter what product is being used or what delivery mechanism is being used, the program will not be successful. Combine exercise, and counting calories with the use of diet patches and those pounds will begin to melt away.

Reasons Why So Many People Are Overweight

Obesity has become a huge problem for most people living in developed countries. Today, 30% of children between the ages of 10 and 17 are obese and 60% of all adults are either overweight or obese. There are many reasons for our overweight problem.

Obesity is responsible for increased rates of stroke, heart attack, type II diabetes, and even some forms of cancer. In fact it is responsible for as many premature deaths as smoking. Obesity has now become a threat to our longevity.

On the surface it would seem that the underlying reason is really quite simple. If a person takes in more calories than the person burns, weight gain is the final outcome. These factors certainly play a role in obesity but there are more factors which contribute to this problem.

Modern society has changed a great deal from just a couple of generations ago when agriculture and manual labor were common place. Today people spend a great deal of the day sitting at a desk in an office, driving the car, or relaxing on the sofa at home. All of which has affected the overall health of people living in developed countries.

By the time a person arrives home, the last thing most are thinking about is going for a walk or heading off to the gym. Combine that with the idea that as a nation we eat just as much food, if not more than our ancestors did without nearly as much physical exertion and suddenly the recipe for obesity becomes very clear.

But there is more to it. Statistics show that we have actually doubled our food intake. This is where the fast food industry is to blame. Everything has been super sized and not in a good way either with most of these foods being high in trans fatty acids (the bad fat) and sugar, it is easy to see that weight gain is inevitable.

But the fast food industry cannot take all the credit. Our schooling system has allowed vending machines to offer children fast food and soft drinks with provides no nutritional value and empty calories. School cafeterias that serve food are hardly a step above fast food. Add to that, most parents nowadays don’t have time to cook traditional wholesome foods due their hectic work schedule and as a result buy convenience foods which are also high in fat and sugar and low in nutrition.

As well both children and adults are now more sedentary than any other time in history. PE is no longer mandatory in schools; recess time has almost disappeared, after school play time has been replaced with the Xbox or Gameboy. Now instead of the entire body getting a workout only the thumbs do.

Most adults are too busy or too tired to add an exercise regime to their day and even something as simple as a walk can seem demanding. The result is people do not have time to burn off all those excess calories that they are consuming through the day.

Statistics show that if adults in the home are overweight then chances are that their children will also be overweight. Statistics have shown that when adults in the home are not physically active children in the home will not be active either. Studies have confirmed that both good and bad eating habits are developed in the home. It is a combination of what adults allow their children to eat and what they serve their children which is contributing to our overweight crisis.

The reasons for our overweight problem are complex. Increasing physical activity and improving nutrition are great ways to start to work towards a solution to this predicament.

Cabbage Soup Diet - What Is It?

I often hang out in online weight loss and fitness forums, reading and answering questions. On of the the questions that I answer most is "What is the Cabbage Soup Diet?".

Some of the common questions about this diet are: Is there really a Cabbage Soup Diet? Is the Cabbage Soup diet healthy? Does it really work? How long can I be on it?

Since there are so many questions surrounding this diet, I have decided to put together this article which will not only answer a few of your questions but will also give you instructions on how to prepare and cook the ever puzzling Cabbage Soup. The you can decide for yourself if you would like to try this diet to shed a few pounds.

The Cabbage Soup diet only lasts 7 days and is quite filling even then, during the seven days you might find yourself a bit irritable, your stomach and digestive system may produce an abundance of gas and you may feel possibly a little light headed. If you have a tendancy to get gas from vegetables or especially cabbage, I suggest that you purchase an anti-gas product such as Beano, otherwise you might find yourself feeling uncomfortably full and bloated and you may find yourself without friends for a few days, due to full blown flatulance.

If you stick to the Cabbage Soup diet for the full 7 days you will find youself losing weight after the second to third day. Remember that this will be water weight and not actual fat. By the sixth day (if you make it that long on this diet) you wil start to see real fat loss.

As with other fad diets, the Cabbage Soup diet works because the meals ar so boring that you only eat when actually hungry. You really won't be tempted have this soup as a mid-night snack. The Cabbage Soup diet also works becuse even though your calorie consumption is very low, this diet is full of fiber which keeps your metabolism rate up, and also keeps you feeling fairly full most of the day.

Now that we have discussed briefly a little about the Cabbage Soup diet, let's get into the actual preparation and cooking for your seven day diet.

Your shopping list:1 -container of mushroons which is approximately 12-16 ounces1/2 of a large head of cabbage or 1 small head. You may use red or green cabbage1 -bunch of celery or 2 bunches of celery hearts2 -medium sized green peppers, or you may use 1 red and 1 -green pepper6 -large onions3 -average sized carrots1-2 cans of diced, whole or chopped tomatoes1 -package onion flavor dry soup mix such as Lipton12 cups of water

Optional ingredients:1 -48 ounce can of V8 or other tomato juice brandBouillon, beef stock, salt, pepper or fresh herbs for a more satisfying taste.

Soup Preparation:Using a large stock pot, first spray with a non-stick coating such as Pam then add your water. If you have decided to also add tomato juice, you may want to use only 6-8 cups of water instead of the full 12 cups. If using, add your tomato juice now.Once you slice or chop your vegatables add them to your stock pot.

Chop your cabbage into bite sized pieces, removing any wilted or brown edged outer layer leaves. You may also want to chop the cabbage center into smaller pieces or discard the hard center.

Wash your celery, chop into 1/4 inch slices and add to the pot.

Slice or dice your peppers. Remember to discard the seeds and any white membrane that may be inside the peppers.

Cut your mushrooms into nice thick pieces as they cook quickly and will shrink while cooking.

Scrub, but do not peel your carrots, then chop them into nice bite sized pieces.

Cooking:Once all of your ingredients have been added place your stock pot over a high heat until it starts to boil. Once it reaches the boiling temperature reduce the heat to a simmer, and simmer for 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until all of your vegetables are tender.During the last hour of cooking add your bouliion, herbs and spices to taste. Remember that herbs and spices add flavor, not calories so let your imagination run wild.

The Diet:Now that your soup is cooked it's time to start the day as directed below.

Day 1On day one you may have all of the Cabbage Soup that you like, along with as much fruit as you like and sugar free jello. However, you may not have any bananas. Also avoid any caffeinated drinks. Be sure to drink plenty of water and along with water you may have sugar free juices or decaffeinated tea or coffee.

Day 2Today, along with your soup you are allowed as many vegetables as you like, but avoid corn, peas or beans. The best way to prepare the vegetables is to steam them, but if you don't have a steamer you may microwave, or stove cook. You may have as much vegetables as you like as long as you do not add any butter or sauces. You may not have any fruit or fruit juices today. As a snack, have a large baked potato, again without butter or sauces.

Day 3Today in addition to your soup you may have as much fruit and vegetables as you like, but you may not have any potatoes. Remember to drink, drink, drink water all day long while you are on this diet.

Day 4Ok, are you still with me or have you given up by now?Today, in addition to your soup, water, decaffeinated drinks and sugar free jello you may have as many bananas as you like, trying not to have more than 8.No fruit or vegetables today.

Day 5Just when you thought that you couldn't make it this far, we add meat. You may have up to 20 ounces of lean meat, cooked without fat or sauces or skinless chicken. You should also have tomatoes (up to 8). The tomatoes will make your body very acidic, so you must drink a minimum of 8 full glasses of water during the day. Be sure to always spread your water out during the day and don't guzzle it-sip it.

Day 6We're almost there.Today's a good food day. Along with your soup you will have as much vegetables (no potatoes) as you like and up to 20 ounces of lean meat or skinless chicken.

Day 7WooHoo, your last day.Today in addition to your last bit of soup, you will be eating brown rice and unsweetened fruit jiuces. You may eat of of the brown rice that you like, but you may not have any white rice, long grain or wild rice.

Day 8Today is the day that you weight yourself to see how much weight you have lost.

A few things that you should know about the Cabbage Soup diet:1. Before starting this diet you should consult with your health care professional to see if it is safe for you to go on this diet. He/she may also want you to check in with their office while you are on this diet.Although, for a perfectly healthy person this diet is fine to be on for 7 days, you may have an underlying health issue that would prohibit it's use.2. This diet will give you a quick boost to your weight loss goals, but it did not train you to eat properly. You still must learn to eat less and to rely on healthy foods not junk food.3. There are different variations of this diet circulating. I suggest that you check out a few since you might learns some tips here and there.4. Adding exercise will add to your burning of calories and fat, but if you feel tired don't push yourself.

In ending, I want you to remember that fad diets may be ok, for just a few days, but never, ever go on any fad diet longer than one week. In doing so you may cause long term damage to your body. A healthy body looks so much better than one that has been on countless fad diets.

When Choosing A Home Treadmill…

Your body is the god-given equipment. But to get it into a proper shape, what will come handy to you is a man-made equipment called treadmill.

And when you will visit the treadmill market, you will find several models promising you the moon. You can get a home treadmill by making a decent investment of around $1000.

With in this price range you will buy a durable treadmill along with a service warranty for 2 years for parts and 10 years for motor warranty.

If your ambitions are high and you wish to be an area level athlete, a confirmed jogger, shell out $ 500 extra. In such models you get a 20” wide belt, 2.5 HP motor and high quality components. This treadmill will give you service for 24 hours.

Do you wish to reach still greater heights? Come to the $2000 range. In such models the decks are longer, the motor is very powerful and withstand any rigor. The belt and the deck are designed to receive generous pounding. The deck of a treadmill should be minimum 3/4” thick.

The hallmark of a treadmill is the motor. It is the heart of the treadmill. It should run not grudgingly, but with a co-operative and competitive spirit. More noise, means more psychological bother and such motors are sure to burn out quickly.

While buying a home treadmill, just don't consider the features of the treadmill alone. Do give a proper thought to your features as well, mainly your weight and height. You need extra horse power for the motor if you are a 'weighty' person. If you are a tall man and if treadmill is built with very short walking/running surfaces, you will find difficulty in practice.

The average length of the treadmill surface is 50”. If your height is more than 6' 3”, consider surfaces between 56” to 58”. You are on the surface during every moment of the practice. Therefore, you need to feel comfortable all the time there and do not carry the anxiety of less space in your mind.

For average size walkers, I suggest a treadmill with a minimum 50" long surface. If you are over 6'3", you may want to consider 56" surface. For tall runners, you want to consider models that have 58" long running surfaces. Nothing is more discomforting, when you feel you are running off the end of a treadmill.

Folding home treadmills have their own plus points. They save lots of space and make their presence felt only at the time of exercise. Otherwise, they quietly lie in any corner.

The greatest advantage of the home treadmill is that you do exercise in the comfort of your home, with no gym bills to pay. You save lots of time in traveling, to and from the gym.

An Ionic Foot Bath To Rebalance, Detox And Alkalize The Body

Webster’s Collegiate dictionary defines it as such; (of, relating to, or having the properties of alkali esp: having a ph of more than 7.) PH stands for; potential of hydrogen. Fluids in your body that have a ph of 6.5 to 7 or 7.5 is considered neutral.

What is Acidosis?

Acidosis is defined by the Webster’s New World Dictionary as; (a condition in which the alkali reserves in the body is lower than normal.) Too much acid in the system creates abnormalities and dysfunction and is a breeding ground for unwanted intruders that cause cell degeneration.

According to Dr. Theodore Baroody, author of Alkalize or Die, says that ACIDOSIS is the basic foundation of all disease!

A body with a ph of 7.5, (75% alkaline and 25% acidic) is a healthy individual whose immune system can operate at its peak and will experience little health problems. It’s when the alkali reserves are mostly used up that we start to experience health problems. It can start out with simple manifestations such as acne, bloating, mild headaches all the way to major diseases such as liver or kidney disease, heart conditions and even cancer. The body’s condition depends on how long it has been acidic. (You can go to any drug store and buy nitrazine strips that tell you what PH level your body is at).

Diet is the main culprit along with environmental toxicity. In the name of greed and profit we have been systematically brainwashed into believing that when you are buying processed food loaded with chemicals, pesticides and modifies foods, that, what you are eating is safe for human consumption. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Before we started altering food, fruits and vegetables were consumed in their natural nutrient rich forms in earth’s mineral rich soil. Meat was consumed by animals that ate pesticide free grasses and leaves. We ate nutrient rich foods and breathed clean fresh air.

If you look at the average American today you’ll see an abundance of pasty, overweight or obese individuals that are sorely in need of an overhaul. Our toxic food sources, water and air are an unfortunate way of life. Our bodies may seem full after we eat but may be starving for actual nutrients we need for normal function let alone healing.

One solution to alkalize and rebalance your system is an ionic footbath system can be of benefit.

An ionic footbath has gained popularity over the last few years but in actuality Rife’s early research in the 1930s has brought us this workable technology.

How does the ionic footbath work?

A module is placed in a tub of clean water and a good grade sea salt. When the system is turned on you will immediately notice a bubbling action due to a controlled electrical current that courses through the water breaking it up. This breaking up of water molecules causes an electron to be displaced from its host which in turn makes it seek out another oxygen molecule. When it does, a negative ion is produced. Negative ions are a very powerful antioxidant and deliver more oxygen to the body. Negative ions alkalize and balance the body which is important for the body to begin healing itself. (Disease can only grab hold in an acidic environment.)

When you alkalize the body it can then begin the process of detoxifying the body through the liver, kidneys, skin etc. and rebuild healthy tissues.

Positive ions are a result of an atom or molecule that’s lost an electron. Free radicals are unpaired electrons and the result is degeneration. When you sit in front of a computer for any length of time you are bombarded with positive ions and that is why you can feel so fatigued and droopy or spaced out. Even living in a city you experience more positive ions. Have you noticed that when you drive out to the country or walk through a forest and breathe clean fresh air or smell that fresh rainfall, you feel better? That is because you are getting more negative ions.

A classic example of a place that is heavily bombarded with negative ions is Niagara Falls. People often go there and feel serene and wonderful. It’s not only because it is a beautiful location but the tremendous power of the water crashing to the bottom is constantly breaking up the molecules and the amount of negative ions are in such abundance that you feel wonderful just being there. An ionic footbath creates that same environment for you so that your body can begin to feel better and be more alert. A foot bath is not a medical device but rather a boost to speed along the recovery process.

What does discoloration of the water mean?

The color changes in the water will occur with or without feet due to the reactions taking place between the module, current and minerals. Their may be some detoxification taking place at the time of the session but color change of the water is not the product you are looking for, although it is very interesting. What is more important is the rebalancing of your system and how you feel after 1 or 2 or 10 or how ever many sessions you need to get the desired result.

Rejuvenate and rebalance and alkalize your system and feel better. You don’t have to be the effect of your environment anymore. A combination of an ionic foot bath, change in diet and moderate exercise can have a dramatic effect on your health.

Losing Weight the Natural Way

Obesity has become one of the leading health concerns in the US. The statistics are shocking. Take a look at these numbers:

  • 58 Million Americans are Overweight; 40 Million are Obese; 3 Million are morbidly Obese

  • Eight out of 10 people over the age of 25 are overweight

  • 78% of Americans don't meet basic activity level recommendations

  • 25% are completely sedentary

  • In 1982 4% of children were overweight; by 1994 that figure had risen to 16%

  • In 2001, 25% of Caucasian children were overweight and 33% of African American and Hispanic children were overweight.
And, this is not just a problem of vanity. This obesity rate is having a significant effect on our health. Again, the statistics are very alarming.

  • There has been a 76% increase in Type II diabetes in adults between the ages of 30 and 40 since 1990

  • 80% of the incidences of Type II diabetes is related to obesity

  • 70% of cardiovascular disease today is related to obesity

  • 42% of breast and colon cancer diagnoses are in obese people

  • 30% of all gall bladder surgeries are related to obesity

  • 26% of obese people have high blood pressure

So, clearly, if you're overweight, you have reason to be concerned. It's time for a wake up call for getting your life on track. If you want a long and healthy life, it's critical to get moving and change the way you eat.

In recent years, the rate of weight loss surgeries have increased dramatically. Over 65,000 people have weight loss surgery each year, and the numbers are growing. But, is it really necessary to have surgery to lose weight? In addition, millions turn to weight loss drugs each year. It makes us wonder; is it even possible to lose really lose weight the old fashioned way any more?

Well, the answer is yes. Certainly, there is a portion of the population that really needs surgical intervention to lose weight. However, these are primarily the people who are at least 100 pounds overweight and who are experiencing significant health problems because of their weight. For these people, weight loss surgery if far less risky than continuing to carry their excess weight.

For most people, however, natural solutions still work. A healthy diet and regular exercise can help you reduce the weight and improve your weight related health problems. For those who have high cholesterol and high blood pressure, but have not yet experienced serious problems such as a heart attack, the problems you're having are almost certainly reversible. So, let's take a look at some of the most effective methods to help you get that weight off and start living a healthy life.

    Change Your Diet

Of course, this is obvious. However, many of you are thinking that you need to drastically cut calories to lose the weight. However, this isn't necessarily true. What you're eating may be just as much to blame for your weight problems and health issues as how much you're consuming.

Research has shown that going on very calorie restrictive diets leads to yo-yo dieting, which, in the long run, slows your metabolism, making it harder than ever to lose the weight for good. So, it's wise to focus first on what you're eating; ensuring that your diet is made up of foods that can give you the nutrients you need without too many calories or too much fat. To do this, focus on eating:

  • Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Lean sources of protein – primarily fish and poultry

  • Only whole grains – this means no white flour – only 100% whole wheat and 100% whole grain products

  • Low fat dairy products

This means ridding your diet of processed foods that contain simple sugars and refined flour. Avoid anything processed. If you focus on eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong ones, you can lose weight while still eating enough to feel satisfied.

    Exercise

Your exercise routine should consist of two parts: aerobic training and weight training. Aerobic training will help you burn calories and exercise your heart. Weight training will help you build muscle, which will make you stronger and make you burn more calories even when resting.

Walking is an excellent way to get your aerobic exercise – and it strengthens the muscles in your lower body, too. Aim for 30 minutes of aerobic exercise about 5 times a week. Your strength training sessions should be about 3 times a week for about 20 minutes session.

    Drink Green Tea

Research has shown that green tea can be extremely effective in helping to control weight and weight related health concerns. A study reported by the UK Tea Council showed that tea has been shown to help regulate insulin, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, burn fat and help turn off the receptors that make us want to eat.

Most of the research on green tea's effects has been performed on animals, but there's every reason to believe that the results will translate to humans, as well. In addition to green tea's ability to help lose weight, it has also been shown to prevent diseases like cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's. So, by adding green tea to your diet, you'll likely not only reduce your weight, but reduce your chances of serious illness, too.

Green tea is loaded with anti-oxidants, which are known to keep us healthy by fighting our body's free radicals. Free radicals are created when we process our food; but they can wreak havoc on our bodies if we leave them unchecked. Free radicals damage our cells and DNA, which eventually leads to disease.

So, you see, it is possible for most people to lose weight naturally. However, it requires long term changes in your daily life. But, if you can learn to incorporate healthy eating along with regular exercise and the potent anti-oxidants found in green tea, you'll be well on your way to taking control of your weight and your health.

Are Our Drinks Making Us Fat?

Recently obesity has become American's number one health concern. The level of obesity in this country has risen to shocking proportions.

  • 58 Million Americans are overweight

  • 40 Million Americans are obese

  • 3 Million Americans are morbidly obese

  • Eight out of 10 people over the age of 25 are overweight

  • In 2001 25% of Caucasian children were overweight

  • 33% of African American and Hispanic children were overweight as of 2001

Doctors and researchers have been looking for clues to why the obesity rate has risen so dramatically. Obviously, our lifestyle habits have changed, and our new habits are making us fat. The habits that seem to be significantly contributing to the rising obesity rate are:

    Activity Level

More of us than ever are sedentary. Even today's children seem to spend most of their leisure time participating in activities that involve sitting on the couch. The number of children who have never participated in any sports activity has risen each year for the past ten. Regular exercise is one of the important keys to losing weight and keeping it off.

Aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day at least 3 times a week. In addition, if you can supplement with weight training, you'll build muscle, which in the long run, will help keep you slim. Muscle, even when resting, burns more calories than fat, so the more muscle you have the more calories you burn all the time.

You don't need to join a gym or have expensive equipment in your home to be able to get regular exercise. Walking, for example, requires no special equipment, other than a good pair of shoes, and is an excellent way to get your exercise. Walking works your heart, strengthens your core and build muscle in your lower body.

Where your children are concerned, you needn't plan significant exercise outings. Running and playing in the yard are a great way for your children to burn off that excess childhood energy and keep fit at the same time. Just get them off the couch!

    Diet

We are a fast food, on the run, never eat at the table society. And, it's catching up with us. When we eat takeout and fast food we're eating far more calories than if we ate a home cooked meal at the table. So, try to consider the following things for your family's diet.

  • Stop the fast food and processed foods

  • Try to eat meals cooked at home as much as possible

  • Watch the white flour and the processed sugars

  • Include more lean protein and less simple carbohydrates

Try to include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Fruits and vegetables are low calorie and extremely filling. Plus, they ensure that you're getting your daily dose of anti-oxidants, which are critical to a long and healthy life. Try adding green tea as a favored beverage. It's low calorie, and will also help ensure you get the anti-oxidants you need.

    Stop the Soda!

One of the big differences in diet between this generation and the one before it is the amount of soda and other sweetened drinks we consume. High calories soda can add hundreds of calories a day to our diet.

One study, reported by the UK Tea Council highlights the significant calorie increase our society has seen in terms of sodas and other high calorie beverages. This study concludes that 50% of our excess calories today come from sodas and other sweetened beverages.* One of the ways that we can make a huge impact in the number of calories we consume each day is to ensure that we cut out the high calorie drinks, particularly the ones that provide no nutritional value.

Keep in mind that when we consume milk and fruit juice, we are taking in calories. However, we are getting vitamins and other nutrients from the calories in these drinks. With sodas and other high calorie sweetened drinks, we load up on the calories, but gain no nutritional value. The study mentioned above concluded that we could significantly cut the excess calories that are leading to our overweight society by simply replacing high calorie, low nutrition drinks with low calorie ones.

To be sure, the battle of the bulge is no easy one. It takes time, education and motivation to keep the calories under control. However, it's critical to our health that we get our weight under control. Obesity leads to a number of illnesses, all of which are entirely preventable by maintaining a healthy diet and activity level, and a healthy weight. Some of the most significant weight related health disorders include:

  • Type II Diabetes

  • Heart Disease

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Sleep Apnea

  • Higher risk for many forms of cancer

  • High Cholesterol

  • Congestive Heart Failure

  • Arthritis

  • Stroke

  • Gout

  • Pregnancy Complications

Our country must get the wake up call and learn to control our weight. Our health, and the health of our children is dependent upon our ability to get our eating habits and our activity level to a healthy balance.

Cholesterol - A Better Understanding Of The Good And The Bad

Typically, when the word cholesterol is mentioned people automatically assume something bad but cholesterol can be both good and bad.

Because cholesterol can be both good and bad it's important to learn what it is and how it affects your health, as well as what you can do in regards to treatment if the need be. In a nutshell, there are two types of cholesterol - LDL and HDL.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol is carried in the blood stream. HDL cholesterol is considered good because it protects our heart from strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. As a result, low levels of HDL increase the risk of heart attack. The optimal level of good cholesterol is about 40mg/dL.

On the other hand, bad cholesterol, also known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is considered bad because if present in excessive quantities has a tendency to clog in the arteries which increases the chances of heat attacks or other heart related diseases.

When excessive amounts are present in an individuals blood it has a tendency to build up on the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain and together, with other substances it forms form plaque. Plaque is a thick, hard deposit that clogs arteries which results in a condition known as atherosclerosis.

The optimal level of bad cholesterol is 200mg/dL or less. Higher amounts tend to increase the chance of heart problems due to an increased change of clogged arteries.

Another important factor regarding optimal cholesterol health is triglycerides. Triglycerides, which are a form of fat, are also produced by the body but they are also come certain types of food. The reason triglycerides are important is because individuals with high triglycerides tend to also have high total cholesterol levels - high LDL or bad cholesterol and low HDL or good cholesterol levels.

Because cholesterol levels change it's important to get them checked fairly regularly. Proper cholesterol levels are a major part of optimum health and so it's important to understand where you stand. Do you have too much of the bad, too little of the good, are both out of whack or ideally, are both good cholesterol and bad cholesterol in check.

Conquer Cellulite: Get Motivated And Change Your Body

Here are 8 great reasons to get on a cellulite reduction program:

    1) Any effective cellulite program includes cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise can be done in small bouts through out the day and needs to be done at an intensity that keeps you at a level where you have enough breath to talk but not to sing. Tons of research show that regular cardiovascular exercise benefits your heart, lungs, bones and metabolism in addition to numerous other disease states.

    2) Cellulite is fat. It is stubborn because it gets caught between bands of connective tissue. In order to reduce fat, you probably need to alter your diet. Needless to say, losing weight through a proper diet can only benefit your health. This definitely includes reducing your consumption of soda and replacing that with water or water with a small lemon wedge squeezed in.

    3) There are a variety of treatments options that range from expensive (Velasmooth) to inexpensive (topical creams and lotions). Why is this good for you? Well, one reason is that you will see small changes from different treatment options. The other reason is that you will be affirming care for yourself. Most women are focused on everyone and everything around the and forget to take care of themselves. When you treat yourself, whether it's a massage, body wrap or cellulite treatment, you affirm that you care about yourself.

    4) Another important exercise element for cellulite reduction is strength and conditioning movements. Specifically, some of these movements are in former and upcoming tips. The intent of doing these tips is to increase the muscle tone of your cellulite prone areas. Strength training is very important because it helps to prevent against bone loss (osteoporosis). It also helps to increase your metabolism and improve your coordination.

    5) Your state of mind is very important in the "Cellulite Tip" program. It's important for you to feel good about yourself through each stage of your transformation. You may have a tiny bit of cellulite on your butt or lots of it, but you need to accept and feel good about yourself no matter how much cellulite you have.

    6) The world is hectic and we all have many responsibilities. We say that we are going to exercise or eat right, but then everything seems to get in the way. The truth is that everyone I know is super busy, so getting on a program that benefits you requires a commitment to yourself. Know that you can keep your commitments to the most important person in you life: YOU!

    7) The key element or "secret weapon" of the "Cellulite Tip" and "Conquer Your Cellulite" program is your ability to visualize and see your body as beautiful with a minimal amount of cellulite (please know you are beautiful even if you do have cellulite). Visualizing and the mind/body connection is your best friend in changing your body and your perception of it. Guided Visualization works with the power of your subconscious and there is one available in the "Conquer Your Cellulite" program. Keep in mind that when you use the power of visualizing, you must visualize YOUR body, not an actress or super model.

    8) Here is the final reason that you should not quit or give up on reducing cellulite: You want and deserve to look and feel great!

A Toast To Resveratrol, An Amazing Grape Antioxidant

One of the most well-known stories about the health benefits of eating fruit is called the French Paradox – the condition of unexpected low incidence of cardiovascular disease in French citizens who regularly eat extraordinary quantities of high-fat foods and consume red wine. These people technically should have high rates of cardiovascular disease but seem protected by the chemicals in wine.

Although we now recognize that high-fat diets are undesirable, the potential benefits of a diet rich in whole food phytochemicals are clear when combined with other healthy dietary and lifestyle practices, such as maintaining a regular exercise program.

Possibly the most publicized phytochemical in red wine is resveratrol found in the skin and seeds of red and purple grapes and dark berries like the blueberry. Having the chemical formula C14H12O3, resveratrol is chemically defined as a stilbene, viniferin or phytoalexin (a Greek-derived term meaning to “protect” (alexin) or to “ward off”).

This designation suits the function of resveratrol in the outer skin of plants as a primary fungicide and antiviral agent with potent antioxidant properties protecting against ultraviolet radiation, pests and injury. Resveratrol belongs to the general class of plant chemicals called phenolics or polyphenols, named from their composition of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms in 6-carbon rings.

    Benefits of Resveratrol

By consuming blue, red, purple and black-skinned plants rich in resveratrol, humans may gain these protective benefits. Early medical research proves this to be true, as resveratrol has been shown in preliminary research on experimental animals to:

•Increase blood flow and reduce the extent of brain cell damage following stroke

•Reduce the activity of brain inflammatory mediators in a model of Alzheimer’s disease

•Reduce vascular plaque formation in rats given a high-fat diet

•Improve the rate of healing in skin wounds

•Protect against lipid oxidation in a model of pancreatitis

•Protect against cellular pathology in a model of diabetic kidney disease

•Protect against liver damage in a model of cholestasis or bile duct occlusion

•Protect against cartilage deterioration in a model of osteoarthritis

    •Stimulate anti-clotting mechanisms in blood

•Suppress appetite and in turn contribute to weight control or loss

    •Enhance sperm production

    •Inhibit formation of cataracts

•Inhibit proliferation of the herpes simplex virus

•Prolong the lives of yeast cells, worms, fish and fruit flies, possibly through mechanisms that affect aging via slowing the rate of cell death

    Anti-Cancer Effect

Resveratrol’s most compelling health effect shown in laboratory studies is its broad-spectrum anti-cancer activity. The online database of medical literature for the US National Institutes of Health, PubMed, cites nearly 500 publications over the past decade of research on resveratrol as a cancer chemopreventive nutrient.

Experimental models of breast, prostate, lung, blood, skin, brain, kidney, bladder, tongue, esophagus and colon cancer show evidence for beneficial effects of resveratrol. It appears also to sensitize cells toward cancer therapy agents, improving the benefit of these drugs. Also, when combined with other plant-derived phenolics, resveratrol’s anti-cancer actions seem to be enhanced, showing the potential benefits of antioxidant synergy from a mixed diet high in colorful fruits and vegetables rich in phytochemicals.

Resveratrol’s actions to inhibit inflammatory mediators and the growth of new blood vessels in tumors (called anti-angiogenesis), plus its ability to accelerate the rate of cancer cell death (called apoptosis, “eh-po-toe-sis”), are synergistic effects in anti-cancer activity. In other experiments, resveratrol inhibited enzymes synthesizing nitro-oxygen radicals like nitric oxide that may be involved in cancer development.

To summarize, resveratrol acts against mechanisms controlling the initiation, promotion and progression of tumor cell growth in laboratory models. It is considered one of the most promising natural anti-cancer agents.

Fortunately for us, resveratrol can be easily introduced into the diet by selecting foods like:

oRed grapes and dark grape juice

oRed wines (and even white ones, but with lower resveratrol levels)

oBlackberries, blueberries, cranberries and lingonberries (and their juices)

    oPistachios

oPeanuts with skins and peanut butter

Take home message: Eat berries! Drink red wine! And be merry!
